Five reasons Why Winter Family Sessions Are Awesome!

June 02, 2019

Lately I have had a few families enquire about a family session, but ask if they can book in when the weather warms up again. Of course that is absolutely no problem, but it got me thinking. I'd love to explain why winter is an amazing time to have your family session. Read till the end and there  may just be a little bonus for you.

1. The Light

The light in Winter is nothing short of magical! It is beautiful and never fails to disappoint. I am a light chaser at heart, I follow it, I seek it out, I use it to create art. This is the best time of year to capture beautiful light.

2. The Timing

The craziness of the end of year is still a couple of months away. For those with little people in school, term four is all sorts of crazy and even crazier on top of all the regular family activities going on. Parties, events, concerts, grand finals, the build up to Christmas. The last quarter of the year disappears in the blink of eye. This time of year is calmer and more more relaxed, making it the perfect time to update your family photos.

3. The Locations

We are incredibly lucky here in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, we have so many amazing locations to choose from. I have access to some absolutely beautiful spots, but at this time of year it can be quieter in the normally more busy spots. Families and tourists tend to pack up earlier in the afternoon, meaning that you have more space on your own to have your family photo adventure.

3. The Clothing

Lets face it, summer is hot, sticky, sweaty. It can be uncomfortable and unpleasant. Sandflies an mosquitoes are out in force and conditions are not always ideal. Winter offers the perfect time of year to dress up in snuggly layers, colours and textures, to play around with clothing and add interesting elements to your photos.

4. Happier Little People

I tend to photograph most of my sessions during, 'golden hour.' That magical time of day in the hour before the sunsets on the horizon. This is when the light s at its prettiest and puts on the best show. In the middle of summer, sessions don't start until 5.30pm, in winter your session starts at 3.30pm. This is perfect if you have little ones! The session is done and dusted before witching hour kicks in and makes for happier little people.

5. Bonus Gift

I only have very limited places left in August. If you want to take advantage of a gorgeous winter session, mention this blog post and you will receive one absolutely gorgeous 10 x 12 wooden block print of your favourite image from the session. This is valued at over $180 and you will receive it as a complimentary gift from  me.

Welcome to our #p52styleloop where a small community of photographers have come together to grow in their photography journey. Every month a new theme, every photographer a new vision. Thank you for following along and enjoy the ride. Next up is our
My little fisherman, he takes it so seriously. He managed to catch a huge crab that let go as soon as it the surface, but he was still stoked with that.

My beautiful Jasper turned 12 today. He’s slowed down so much. He’s slightly deaf, slightly blind, a little bit senile and often confused, his back legs have just about given away and he sleeps a lot, but he’s still here with us and
My succulent collection is slowly expanding. Love the colours in these two, so vibrant and pretty.
Love watching these guys play in the afternoons and what adventures they come up with. 😍

We’ve spent each afternoon walking and exploring. We are lucky to have a great bush reserve near us that the boys can play and exercise in.
Milk moustaches are just the cutest on my little milk monster.
Natey lost his first tooth on Friday night. He’s been waiting a year since Harry lost his to join the ranks. He was very excited and stoked the tooth fairy visited him.
Pretty sure 80% of their bday is spent wresting each other. There are three of them in that pile.
This little dude just makes me so happy! He’s about to turn eight and I can’t quite believe it. He’s making that transition from little boy to big boy and his emotions are up and down right now as he tries to find that balance, but
We jumped on the #rainbowtrailaustralia bandwagon this week. I’ve gone through stages of being really happy I have this extra time at home with my boys to really worried about what’s going on around us. Emotions have been up and down all
Race ready pigs this morning. One on the bat mobile, the other on a tow truck. They are so patient with my boys, though Evie did walk off her race vehicle half way through the race in protest. 🤷🏻‍♀️
These two piggies get carted around everywhere. They are so patient and just sit where he puts them.
These are growing outside my favourite nursery. We popped in the other day to grab a plant just as they were closing and I grabbed this in their gardens out the front.
So much glow! 💕
Little guy fell off the flying fox, ended up covered in sand, but brushed it off and hopped back on again. Not before I grabbed a quick photo though.
